Fluted molding is a special kind of trim, with ridges inside the edges of the board. Fluting can be simple, basically just round-ended stripes, or complex, with braided or rope-type carving. Fluted molding is usually used as door and window trim, especially on the exterior of Colonial style houses. It also can be used as baseboard or crown molding, although this is more unusual. Fluted molding adds an ornate look to even a plain house and frequently is used to frame porticos around an entry door. Installation uses plinth or base blocks and top rosettes or corners. AKA; fluted trim, fluted casing.
