The (mis)adventures of Otto's convertible top installation continue!
Day 11
Today was our LAST day in the garage/shop!
We finished up gluing and stapling the headliner to the tacking strip in preparation to installing the rear window glass.
We affixed the rubber seal to the window glass and added a cord into the seal to aid in installation.
We installed the rear window into the frame.
We glued down the front flaps as well as the rear quarter facing flaps.
We installed the metal trim strip and the top pins.
We cleaned up and drove home! (YAY!)
And then we installed the rubber seals that mount to the top frame and fit against the side windows.
We then celebrated by eating a steak dinner! I had to wait a few days till we had some sunshine and warmer temps so I could finish things up. (final adjustment of rear tensioning cable, installed plastic pieces and backrest locks, as well as reinstalling (with adhesive) the foam padding and carpet that fit the rear luggage area and covered up the new headliner ends).
And the last thing I discuss is how the rear window installation was successful, as the seal was still very dry after having a LOT of precipitation. (Snow/Rain mix).
But most importantly, I understand exactly where I made the mistakes that affected the appearance so much. I tried to install the headliner while it was COLD. While I tried to warm it up, I only did so for a small section of it at a time, and therefore it would NEVER stretch enough to fit with the original bow's height. But I was in a race against time, so I compromised and lowered the bow. That was all fine until we needed to stretch the top.... which was expecting an additional 2 inches of height for that bow that is not there... so it could not stretch. What was left was wrinkles and puckering.
Never do this in a hurry And only do this when you know you can have your parts WARM before trying to install them. Thanks for watching, commenting and your encouragement!!
If you want to see more of these kinds of videos, check out the series we are producing about my daughter's 16 birthday project car (1972 Super Beetle Convertible - she has named "Kuiper.") Also as a playlist on this channel. Have a great day!!
